This study presents a comparative analysis of proprietary and custom point cloud classification pipelines in the context of cultural heritage documentation, using the Monodri Bridge in Evia, Greece, as a case study. The research evaluates the performance, flexibility, and suitability of commercial software solutions versus tailored, open-source workflows, focusing on their ability to accurately classify and segment complex architectural and geomorphological features for heritage-oriented applications. High-resolution point cloud data were processed through both approaches, allowing a detailed comparison of classification accuracy, computational demands, and adaptability to heritage-specific requirements. The findings highlight the potential of custom pipelines to offer enhanced methodological transparency, greater control over processing parameters, and improved reproducibility, while proprietary tools provide streamlined, user-friendly environments with simplified workflows that reduce user workload. Overall, this study contributes to the advancement of digital cultural heritage methodologies by demonstrating how different classification strategies can influence the quality and reliability of 3D documentation outputs.
