Abstract

This paper analyzes the morphogenesis of suburban settlements within the periphery of Banja Luka, tracing their development from the mid-twentieth century to the present. The research identifies several phases of suburban growth shaped by social crises, migration, post-war reconstruction, and transitional conditions. Through the examination of spatial structure, parcelisation, building typologies, and infrastructure, the study highlights a shift from extensive low-density expansion toward increasing densification and morphological heterogeneity. The results reveal a clear discrepancy between formal planning frameworks and actual development processes, emphasizing the need to interpret suburbia as an integral component of the contemporary urban system.
