Abstract

This paper examines planning possibilities for adapting semi-public schoolyards into a network of open public and green spaces which contributes to urban resilience in the context of reduced public areas and exacerbated urban microclimate. The aim is to provide new understanding of resilience in the context of urban planning of schoolyards as open public spaces. The adaptive schoolyard model is defined through five key attributes: multifunctionality, greenness, safety, accessibility and connectivity. Three schoolyards in Banjaluka (Republic of Srpska) are selected to examine the feasibility of applying the model and to evaluate the flexibility of planning requirements in terms of their capacity to be upgraded in accordance with the specific needs of the defined model.
