Globalization, the crisis of urban identity, and the endangerment of authentic urban patterns, morphology, and the image of the city represent significant challenges in urban planning and architectural practice. The relevance of this topic has been recognized and, among other aspects, will be the focus of this paper, which includes a case study of a selected micro-location within the central core of Banja Luka. Specifically, the study examines the Hotel “Bosna” building together with its immediate surroundings as a unified entity, which has had a significant impact on the formation of the city’s character, as well as on the application of certain urban planning principles and concepts. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the importance that an individual building can have for a city and its residents, and to suggest how it can serve as a unique guardian of history, tradition, and culture, both in symbolic and material terms.
