Abstract

Modern cities face traffic congestion, inefficient use of resources, and pollution, challenges that are intensified by urbanization. The smart city concept, based on the application of the Internet of Things (IoT), enables more efficient management of urban infrastructure and improvement of the quality of life. This paper examines the application of affordable IoT solutions in the areas of waste management, traffic management, and air quality monitoring. An analysis of examples from cities such as Zurich, Oslo, Geneva, as well as Novi Sad and Zagreb, reveals that IoT contributes to cost reduction, improved resource utilization, and environmental protection, while underscoring the need for a clear legal and ethical framework and a sustainable development strategy.
