Abstract

Postwar modernist urbanism remains labelled by dominant narratives that frame modernism primarily through failure and postmodern rejection. While critiques of modernist planning have largely emerged from Western European and North American contexts, this study argues that such interpretations cannot be universally applied. The paper provides new argumentation for the critical reassessments and contributes to a more nuanced understanding of modernism as a context-dependent and adaptable urban project. New Belgrade residential blocks, conceived and designed in former Yugoslavia show that approach that transcends common downfalls can offer valuable input for contemporary reassessment of modernism and lessons for new developments.
