Abstract

This paper examines Orthodox church architecture through the concept of actualizing space, proposing that sacred architecture becomes fully intelligible only through the liturgical event that activates its spatial structure. Rather than focusing on stylistic continuity, the study interprets church architecture as a hierarchical and sequential spatial order structured by sanctuary, nave and narthex. Drawing on phenomenological approaches to architecture, the paper argues that hierarchy, thresholds and spatial sequence become meaningful through communal gathering and ritual practice, revealing tradition as a continuity of spatial principles rather than merely stylistic reproduction.
