This paper analyses the role of the Ulog Hydropower Plant reservoir in mitigating flood waves in the Neretva River basin. A mathematical simulation model was applied to transform flood waves with return periods of 10, 20, 50, and 100 years, under different initial reservoir water levels. The results indicate that complete retention of flood waves cannot be achieved solely by operating the Hydropower plant (HPP) and Small Hydropower plant (SHPP) units, however, appropriate operational strategies can significantly reduce peak discharges. The need for timely reservoir pre-release and coordinated operation of evacuation structures is emphasized. It is concluded that reliable forecasts and robust operational models are essential for effective active flood protection.
